Label TextLaverne Nelson Black used the color orange to transform a standard composition. The artist made many works of art focused on a single rider on horseback, shown in profile, as a type of Westerner. In this painting, Black included information about the cowboy’s dress and gear, but it is the overall, unifying orange that holds the viewer’s attention. He used a vivid, saturated orange for the background. He employed shades of orange in depicting the cowboy and horse. Orange is the only true color; the other paints are neutrals: whites, browns, and blacks. His bold orange invites the viewer to meditate on color and pattern.
