DescriptionStanding man in Charles Marion Russell "Transport to the Northern Lights" (model)

Label TextThese casts derive from a sculpture that Russell made depicting a dog sled and driver. (See nearby photograph of Transport to the Northern Lights.) He modeled the huskies and sled man in wax, and he constructed a sled carrying bundles from wood, twine, and other materials. Russell painted parts of the sculpture. Eventually the Montana Historical Society acquired it. The Historical Society separated the lead dog and the driver. The organization had a foundry cast the figures in metals, making an edition of 30 bronzes and 1 silver cast of each. The Society was able to preserve the wax figures and restore the original sculpture. The casts preserve a glimpse of Russell’s creativity.
