DescriptionHandwritten letter penned by John J. Audubon in slanted script writing on tanned, aging paper. The writing is on both sides of the paper and was once folded into sections to create a makeshift envelope where the letter was addressed to an Edward Harris. A red postal stamp from Charleston, SC was added.Label TextAudubon wrote to his friend Edward Harris, a farmer and amateur naturalist. In this letter he discussed plans for a trip. He was planning a voyage in the Gulf of Mexico. In 1837 Audubon traveled to Texas, accompanied by Harris and John Woodhouse Audubon. The letter mentions the Sabine River. For the trip Audubon instructs Harris to buy “Musquitoe Net” and “fishing lines and Hooks, for the Sea, and Rivers, fishing.” During the 1837 trip Audubon observed many birds and took notes about their habits.
