Label TextThe setting sun offers artists the opportunity to paint orange as the sky turns dark and moody. American artists often looked back to Europe for training in the arts. They also found inspiration from European masterpieces of the past and different landscapes. Inness made several trips to Europe. In 1874, he spent a summer in Normandy, France, where he painted this sunset scene using fluid brushwork.
