Label TextIn this painting, Phillips concentrates on observers of, rather than participants in, Pueblo ceremonies or dances. The artist gives a sense of the many different experiences at a ceremony. Native people wrapped in conventional shawls or blankets observe from the top of a pueblo. Some talk and gesture while others observe in solemnity. Phillips paints with a modern simplification of form. He also presents a new image of the Indian to the viewer—one where Native peoples are not dressed in fringed buckskin and feathers.
