Label TextBob Lemmons, who was born into slavery about 1848 in Texas, became well known for his ability to capture wild horses. After his freedom, Lemmons worked on a ranch and developed his skills. Author J. Frank Dobie wrote about Lemmons in his book The Mustangs. Artist Charles Banks Wilson served as illustrator for the book. Wilson’s drawing of Lemmons showed how he had the confidence of wild horses and could sleep near them. Dobie called Lemmons, “the most original mustanger I ever met.”
