Label TextPaul Kane painted this self-portrait sometime during his return trip. He presented himself as a strong traveler, who had faced many challenges during his difficult journey. In the lower Columbia valley, he experienced extreme heat where his dog virtually burned up. But in the Canadian Rockies, large cakes of ice formed daily in his moccasins. Kane’s journal entries from this time provide additional insight into his character. He appears as a man who is sensible and savvy about the world and also deeply curious and open minded.
