DescriptionVertical print of a brown bird on a branch. The branch is forked and has orange flowers. There is a butterfly to the left of the bird.Label TextJohn James Audubon wanted to make The Birds of America available to more people. The double elephant folio size was impressive, but also expensive. He next produced the contents with a smaller sized page. The royal octavo version has a page size of about 10 x 6 ½ inches. This volume is open to Swainson’s Swamp Warbler. Audubon used other artists as assistants. His son John Woodhouse Audubon painted the bird. Maria Martin, a friend of the Audubon family, painted the lovely butterfly and azalea for this image. The name of the bird today is Swainson’s warbler.
