English naturalist John Gould published important books on birds from around the world. Gould made sketches from life and from specimens. He had other artists make more finished representations for his books. His research brought exotically colored birds to the attention of European readers. This bird from New Guinea has spectacular orange plumage. Hart excelled at the dramatically colored birds. Gould gave the common name as golden bird of paradise. Today, the common name is masked bowerbird.
