Label TextLutcher owned a set of L’Illustration Horticole, a French language journal. His set dates from 1854 to 1893. This print illustrates two types of collecting. In the nineteenth century collectors sought rare and exotic plants. Orchid hunters went to South America to find new specimens. F. C. Lehmann found this beautiful orchid. L’Illustration Horticole printed an image of the plant. People valued the journal’s elegant prints. They too were collectible.
