Label TextThe United States government sponsored art making through its exploring efforts. The government employed artists to make pictures as a way of learning about the land. One of the most extensive projects involved the search for a railroad route. Richard H. Kern served as the artist on a route through Colorado and Utah. The expedition was surveying a route through Ute Indian territory. He and several other members of the expedition died from a clash with Ute Indians. John Mix Stanley re-drew Kern’s sketches for publication.
