Label TextBorn in San Antonio, Texas, Julian Onderdonk showed an early talent for art and learned the fundamentals under his father Robert Jenkins Onderdonk. Desiring more training, he went to New York and studied under the influential American painter William Merritt Chase. He returned to Texas where he became a leader in the arts. He became known especially for his paintings of bluebonnets, such as this one which depicts a field of bluebonnets near a building that may be Old Main, University of Texas.
