DescriptionHorizontal oil painting depicting a landscape with scattered low buildings and scrubby bushes and trees. A range of snow-capped mountains stands in the background against a blue sky.Label TextEllis conveyed a love of the New Mexican landscape in his depictions of different seasons. Fremont Ellis’ successive homes in New Mexico gave him a base to explore the landscape. In the 1920s, he built his own adobe house in Santa Fe. In the 1940s, he designed a ranch complex, La Hacienda de San Sebastian, south of Santa Fe. Wanting to be closer to the art market, Ellis moved back to the city of Santa Fe in 1955. He lived on Canyon Road in a home/studio that artist William Henderson designed.
