DescriptionHorizontal oil painting depicting a low cluster of buildings with smoke rising from their chimneys in the foreground amid a snowy landscape. A horse stands in a fenced yard of one of the houses. Pine trees cover hills that recede into the background.
Label TextEllis possibly painted this snow-covered landscape in Colorado. He made trips there from his New Mexican home. Memories of childhood homes may have created an affinity for this type of landscape. Artist Fremont Ellis was born in the small mining town of Virginia City, Montana. In his very early years, his family lived in other remote towns of the northern state. Ellis returned to visit Virginia City and other sites of his childhood in 1980. Upon return to New Mexico, he told his daughter how much he loved “the Big Sky Country of Montana.”
