Label TextIn 1911, Dunton made a trip to the West from the New York City area where he worked as an illustrator. He made this watercolor sketch, inspired by a scene in Oregon. He portrayed cowboys waiting for a “Rendezvous” near a hitching post. He called the cowboys "Buccaros," a term usually spelled “buckaroos.” This word comes from the Spanish word for cowboy, “vaquero.” Dunton’s sketch is loosely painted, yet it is a complete composition. The artist possibly planned to make a large oil painting. A few years after this trip, Dunton moved permanently to the West.
