Label TextAn old timer, Zenas A. Curtis, inspired this elegiac painting. Dunton talked with Curtis about his memories. The cattleman’s silhouette against the foothills in fading light gave the artist an idea for a painting. Dunton’s aging cowboy in the setting sun seems to represent the artist’s vision of the disappearing real West with its cowhands, cattle, and range life. Ranchers today would contest this vision as they continue to herd their cattle on their range lands.
