Label TextJohn Mix Stanley traveled extensively in the West to gather images for an Indian Gallery of portraits. His participation in two governmental expeditions gave him first-hand knowledge of plans to expand the nation across the continent. In 1846 he accompanied an expedition with the Army of the West through the Southwest to San Diego to help secure California for the United States.
