Riding Herd in the Rain evokes the tedium of herding cattle. Although Remington sketched this work in the 1890s, it reminds the viewer of the cattle drives of earlier decades. Long journeys often went through dry, dusty land. Rain showers, often welcome, presented other challenges in wet, uncomfortable conditions and potential thunderstorms. Those could lead to stampedes. Remington’s weary cowboy must remain vigilant.
