Label TextRemington painted this work of art to illustrate a novel he wrote about the American West, John Ermine of the Yellowstone. The artist created a story about a white man who had been raised by the Crow Indians and who worked as a scout for the U.S. Army. This painting portrays infantry soldiers engaged in a skirmish with Sioux Indians. In the middle ground on the right side of the canvas, John Ermine rides his horse among the soldiers and soon will dash off to obtain reinforcements. The novel tells a tragic story of conflict in the West.
