Label TextThis portrait of Audubon appeared in Scribner’s magazine in March of 1893. It accompanied the article Audubon’s Story of His Youth with an introduction by his granddaughter Maria P. Audubon. Published after his death, Audubon romanticized his childhood biography. Further edits were made by his granddaughter. The miniature was originally done on ivory, and it was Audubon’s favorite likeness of himself, at about age 46. His printer Robert Havell also used this image to further promote the sale of the Birds of America.
