Label TextCurtis produced an extraordinary project, the twenty-volume set of The North American Indian. He set out to photograph all the Indian peoples who kept their traditions. He believed cultures were disappearing. Curtis devoted over twenty-five years of his life to the work and visited over eighty tribes. This photogravure depicts a hunter of mountain sheep. The text said that ambitious hunters sought the sheep grazing in inaccessible parts of the Bad Lands. Curtis photographed so that the viewer looks up to the imposing figure.
