Label TextRussell photographed at Cowboys of Color rodeos. Those rodeos include cowboys and cowgirls from diverse cultures. This portrait of Mr. Chavarria evokes the traditions of the vaquero. The vaquero is the cowboy in Spanish language regions. When he made his rodeo portraits, Russell staged the person against a plain, black background. He thus emphasized the individual person, rather than action or event.
