Label Text"Fast Gardening in Style" A dream garden needs a dream car. In the 1940s, Lutcher Stark began designing a manicured greenspace in his favorite childhood swamp. He oversaw nearly every aspect of Shangri La from the seat of his Crosely sports car. From spreading birdseed with a custom designed seeder to giving private tours, this Crosley did it all. Lutcher grew up in nature with the family gardener as one of his closest friends. As an amateur botanist, he collected plants from all over the world as well as images and depictions of animals and nature. One of the crown jewels of his personal collection was John James Audubon’s personal portfolio of The Birds of America.
ProvenanceH.J. Lutcher Stark [1887-1965]; by inheritance to his wife Nelda C. Stark [1909-1999]; Estate of Nelda C. Stark; gifted August 7, 2002 to the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation [per Walter G. Riedel, III]; accessioned to The W.H. Stark House
