Label Text"Longhorn and a Hupp" In 1905, Lutcher Stark brought his father’s Pope Toledo with him to college, making him the first student at the University of Texas (UT) to have a car. After a few years driving the Pope Toledo, he purchased and registered this Hupmobile. Light and fast, it was the perfect car for a recent college graduate and manager of the Longhorn football team. During his time at UT, Lutcher developed a distinct style. Photos show his college dorm decorated with Navajo rugs, mission style furniture, sports memorabilia, and art featuring western and natural themes. He collected these same things for the rest of his life and many fill the Stark Museum of Art today.
ProvenanceH.J. Lutcher Stark [1887-1965]; by inheritance to his wife Nelda C. Stark [1909-1999]; gifted August 31, 1971 to the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation; accessioned to The W.H. Stark House
