DescriptionThis page is bound in Volume IV, Part 44.Label TextAudubon’s print of the orchard oriole shows the coloration of the bird. The female has plain yellowish-green coloring. The young male has similar coloring. In the text accompanying his illustrations, Audubon discussed the male’s coloring changing with age. He wrote that after some time “a curious mixture of dull orange or deep chestnut peeps out.” The next spring “brings him nearer toward perfection, because at that time the deep chestnut colour has taken possession of the lower parts.” After another spring, the male appears with completed coloring as represented in the print.
