Label TextOn loan to "William Herbert 'Buck' Dunton (1878-1936): A Mainer Goes West" at the Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, Arizona (June 17, 2023 - June 30, 2024) In Sunset in the Foothills, Dunton uses a daring and seemingly modern perspective. He looks down upon the landforms and completely fills the canvas with them. The foothills in the title tell us that the artist could be looking down from a higher mountain. Along with the painted shadows, the word sunset tells us the time of day. Dunton includes narrative details like the barking hound, a type of dog that would have been brought into the West. The painting depicts a traditional subject of Western art, the Indian hunter in the landscape, updated with a modern approach. Dunton presents the viewer with a new vision of the West.
