BiographyThe Columbia Phonograph Company was founded in 1887 by Edward D. Easton. The company gets its name from the District of Columbia where it was orignally based. Beginning in the late 1930s the company has been owned by a number of parent companies including ARC, CBS, and, currently, Sony Music Entertainment. The company is commonly known by the names of its record label, Columbia Records.
