Label TextFor Higgins, floral arrangements served as realistic subjects that he could abstract into meditations on pictorial elements. In White Flowers, Higgins used the exploding profusion of blossoms to explore texture. He also experimented with various ways to depict the color white. Higgins created the illusion of flowers through thickly applied paint. He then spun variations on his theme by depicting flowers as patterns on the vase and in the gold cloth. His approach revealed a modern sensibility.
